How to avoid problems with you’re wood floor
- A short extract from the PWF installer checklist series.

Cracks and gaps

During the year the humidity/temperature changes, as its gets either hotter or colder we start to adjust the temperature in our home. The moment we experience a cold snap, the central heating is switched on and your wood floor starts to change in size.

As the moisture is drawn out the wood it starts to shrink and you start to see small gaps where previously none were present. Don’t worry this is natural.

The solution

If you would like to minimize the gaps, add moisture to the air in your home. For example, when bathing or showering allow the steam to enter other parts of the house, when your dishwasher has finished, open the door and allow the moist air to escape. You could even consider installing a humidifier.

As soon as spring arrives and the heating is switched off your floor will start to expand and all the gaps will disappear.

Example of a well laid floor

Light & dark woods

Gaps, which form between the boards, notice more on light coloured floors such as Maple and beech and less on darker floors like oak and merbau.

Cupping

In certain cases the individual boards that make a wood floor start to cup, this is caused by either high humidity / water spills (flood) / damp sub-floor etc. The actual cupping or curling process is caused by an imbalance of moisture through the thickness of the wood. As the wood dries, the top of the wood dries faster than the bottom and the wood cups.
The only solution is to allow the wood to dry completely and see if the planks return to their original shape. If they don’t then the floor must be sanded and the surface finish re-applied.

A Word of Warning

If the floor is sanded before the boards have completely dried, crowning will occur, the opposite of cupping. Because the bottom of the board is still continuing to dry-out, it starts to flatten and the previously sanded top edges will now seem to sink.
